Salvador de Bahia was founded on 29th March 1549, and is now the sixth-largest city in the country with approximately 2.7 million inhabitants. The historical name of the coastal city, which was once the first capital, is „São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos“, which means in English „Holy Savior of All Saints Bay“. The name dates back to the day of the arrival of the first sailors on 1st November 1501 and today blends historical architecture with Afro-Brazilian culture, music, and dance. Urban art can be found throughout the city, but especially in the Pelourinho district with colorful colonial buildings, part of the „Cidade Alta“, means in English „Upper Town“, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The following photos were photographed by world traveller CHRIS AMES.
Museum of Contemporary Art of Bahia – MAC BAHIA

The MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART OF BAHIA or in short MAC BAHIA opened on 29th September in 2023, with the 60 hours program „MAC 60 horas“ its striking graffiti façade created as part of the exhibition “Muro,” a curated collective project. More than 50 street artists from Salvador painted the exterior walls live during the opening, turning the building itself into an urban gallery.

Participants included the collectives MUSAS, ARTE MARGINAL SALVADOR, 13 MENOS 5, and PIXA MINA, as well the artists HARI DALI, EDER MUNIZ, DENISSENA, ANDERSON AC, KLEBER RASK, TIAGO FARAÓ, ANANDA SRTAS, and CABULOSO. The works were created under the curatorial direction of DANIEL RANGEL and reflect the museum’s concept as an open, collective space that actively integrates urban art into an institutional context.
