The photographer about the place: „In 2014, Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, underwent a major regeneration project called the ‚urban makeover scheme‘ designed to reinvent and reinvigorate the city. This included new museums, statues, government buildings and the construction of three imitation antique pirate ships in the middle of the Vardar River. Two of them currently operate as restaurants and cafes, with one offering hotel beds. The third has been abandoned and is completely unsafe. Plans to remove this one from the river have been discussed since 2020, but five years on the vessel still sits swaying on the water.

Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate. Country #36… North Macedonia! Been wanting to come here for awhile for touristic adventures but obviously I had to tick off atleast one bando. I had some other places in mind here such as an old, forgotten bunker, but having spotted this abandoned pirate ship whilst splitting the G in the adjacent Irish pub, I knew this was the one for me to explore! Very easy, although somewhat sketchy access. Once on the ship, it’s clear the local kids had beaten me too it as its an absolute wreck! The upper level floors are very dodgy so I was very careful not to fall through them into the murky water because as we all know, dead men tell no tales.“ – Lost Places & Forgotten Faces
