Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta. North of Calgary, it benefits from the economic activity linked to the oil sands and is experiencing growth. Here, we’re in oil country, and that’s a real shame. All is not as black as oil, however… In the heart of a province that leans very, very far to the right politically, downtown Edmonton represents a welcome and much-needed pocket of progressivism. The city is worth a visit. It’s built on cliffs on both sides of the North Saskatchewan River, offering lovely walks along the riverbank. On the south side is Old Strathcona, the historic heart of the city. Today, it’s a trendy neighborhood bisected by Whyte Avenue. There are many murals and streetart, and a ton of great microbreweries clustered along the old CPR rail yard.
On the north side is the modern, rapidly expanding downtown. Fourth Street is the vibrant commercial artery that leads directly to the home of the Edmonton Oilers, the famous NHL hockey team. The city boasts a street art festival: the EDMONTON MURAL FESTIVAL. The now-defunct Rust Magic festival left behind some beautiful murals. A few interesting museums and the Alberta Legislature building round out the picture. To the west lies West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping mall in the world. For enthusiastic only! If you’re traveling through Alberta, stop in Edmonton for two or three days. There’s plenty of streetart to discover, a beautiful connection with nature thanks to the majestic river, and you can enjoy some excellent beer! – Patrice Loranger
