The Skopje Fortress is definitely a cultural sight you have to visit, and on the way you can find a lot of great graffiti. The defensive bastion was built on a hill east of the Vardar River in the 6th century during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian, also called Iustinianus Primus. You can walk straight up via stairways, or via roads and paths that lead circulating around the small mountain. Long walls have been built along these roads and around the edge of the hill, some are still made of historic stone material. Restoration work is long overdue, so graffiti artists have had an impact over the years and upgraded the walls with some creativity and color. On this page we show you the graffiti pieces in the Highway Tunnel along the lower level. But there is much more, the whole southern fortress hill side is a spray area, divided depending to the hight levels, so we have also divided it accordingly with the pages on the website.
