NORTH MACEDONIA: Streetart Skopje – Centar – Ulica Makedonija 22 – Teshkoto Sculptures – ZLATAN TRAJKOV

Teshkoto  –  Macedonian Traditional Male Dance  –  2009

The bronze sculpture by artist ZLATAN TRAJKOV is titled „Teshkoto“ and depicts several men performing the famous Macedonian traditional folk dance of the same name. The sculpture was the first sculpture created as part of the SKOPJE 2014 project. It received funding from the government of the Republic of Macedonia (currently North Macedonia), which was led by the nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party at that time. The official aim was to enhance the classical aesthetic of the capital Skopje, while also improving its earthquake resilience. Approximately 20 buildings and more than 40 monuments were constructed throughout the city.

Teshkoto is one of the most beautiful folk dances in Western Macedonia, particularly in the ethnographic region of Mijak. The dance symbolizes the hardships of the people in this region. Its origins lie in the time when the locals left their homeland in search of a better life. Over the years, however, it has also become a symbol of all the suffering inflicted on this region in the past.
