Louis-Joseph Papineau
This ceramic mural, created in 1966 by ceramist and sculptor JEAN CARTIER and illustrator GEORGE JUHASZ, pays tribute to Louis-Joseph Papineau, after whom the metro station is named. In 1837-1838, politician Louis-Joseph Papineau led a rebellion against British rule in French Canada. For several years, the Patriotes Party had been demanding greater autonomy and responsible government, meaning freedom from British rule. After several victories on the ground, the rebellion was violently suppressed by the British army. Papineau was forced to flee to the United States and was pardoned a few years later. He even resumed his political activities. The Patriotes‘ Rebellion is still celebrated as the beginning of the autonomy demands of French Canadians who became Quebecers, demands which still exist today. – Patrice Loranger
