Siamoises
The mural is located on one of the walls of the building that houses the Portuguese Philharmonic Orchestra of Montreal. We are here in the heart of the Portuguese district of the city. Portuguese immigration began in 1953 in Montreal. The first immigrants came mainly from the Azores and Madeira. In the 1960s and 1970s, decolonization and the Carnation Revolution drove other immigrants to Montreal. Today, Montreal’s vibrant Portuguese community numbers approximately 60,000 people. The community has its institutions, its cafes, its restaurants. Many Montrealers like to eat good Portuguese-style chicken in a small neighborhood restaurant. – Patrice Loranger
