Cuddly Criticism

In Quebec, the Dépanneurs are small local shops where it is possible to find beer, cigarettes, various drinks and some food products. At one time, there was a convenience store on every street corner in Montreal. From now on, they are less numerous, but they are still found in large numbers in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods.

These neighborhoods, unfortunately, are often referred to as a food desert. Low-income people who do not have a car to get to supermarkets have to fall back on convenience stores and the unhealthy, processed and poor quality products that are offered there at often prohibitive prices. Another problem associated with social inequalities present in Montreal as elsewhere. – Patrice Loranger
