Chinatown
Chinese immigration began around 1877 in Montreal. The first arrivals settled north of Old Montreal in the area where Chinatown is located today. Most of these Chinese immigrants worked as laundry workers. Most of them were men. As their profession requires proximity to customers, the Chinese population has spread over the decades in different sectors of the city. Chinatown was gradually becoming a service and business center rather than a place of residence. Subsequently, Vietnamese and Hong Kong immigration enriched Chinatown and the Asian presence in Montreal. The district gradually became a place of commercial and cultural exchange.
In 2021, Chinatown is still going strong. Restaurant, food markets and all kinds of shops delight Montrealers. A few years ago, the city offered the Chinese community four monumental gates which mark the different entrances to the district. The Montreal Chinese Hospital is also located there. I like to go and stroll there for a few hours on occasion and feel a little further east! – Patrice Loranger
