The sunrise will guide them back east
This artwork in the ground floor of the Comfort Hotel was made with spray paint, patterned plastic stencils and markers by CATY AGUILERA. She sends the birds out on a journey. The birds are cranes, commonly found in Chinese mythology and also found throughout the East Indies. She sends them back east, where they came from.
Surrounded by barbarians
This here is the second artwork of CATY AGUILERA. The wall painting was made with spray paint, patterned plastic and stencils. The monkeys are rhesus macaques, a species found in India, Thailand, Vietnam and southern China, among other places. In Hinduism, rhesus monkeys are considered sacred animals, and are therefore allowed to live undisturbed in cities and often appear at Hindu temples. The monkeys are often seen in cities and thus become part of street life. They therefore felt obvious as street art motifs for the pillar. However, the name of the painting suggests that these macaques are so civilized and fancy with their Chinese umbrellas and fans that they consider the people around them to be uncivilized barbarians.
