The former Beogradska Industrija Piva brewery, or BIP for short, was founded in 1839 and flourished to become one of the largest beer suppliers in the country. At its peak in the 1970s, BIP provided over a quarter of the Yugoslav beer market. In September 2015, the company filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations in December 2021, leaving the large factory site derelict. Shortly afterwards, however, various music bars, pubs, nightclubs and concert halls moved in and breathed new life into the area, and the address Cetinjska 15 in the Skadarlija neighborhood is now probably the most important bar hotspot in Belgrade. Art venues, galleries, vinyl stores and even a boulder gym followed.
The spacious area around the factory buildings with the large chimney is also ideal for urban art with an industrial lost place look. In the meantime, several of the restaurant spots and bars have been embellished with murals on the outside and creative projects are constantly taking place. Some people also call the place the „Mini-Kreuzberg of Belgrade“, in reference to the hipster district of Kreuzberg in the German capital Berlin. Those can be found mostly in the tunnel passageway and behind the northern part of the brewery, but also spread across the entire site.
