CABO VERDE: Streetart Santa Maria - Ilha do Sal - Urban Art Project Arte D'Zone

Santa Maria is a coastal town in the south of the island of Sal in Cape Verde with around 17.000 inhabitants and was originally founded in the 19th century as a small fishing village and transshipment point for salt exported from the island’s salt flats. With the decline of the salt trade, the town initially lost its importance, but experienced a strong upswing from the 1990s onwards because of international tourism. Worth seeing are the church Nossa Senhora das Dores, the pier of Santa Maria, where fishing boats dock and which offers an insight into traditional everyday life, as well as the historical salt mining pans of Pedra de Lume in an old volcanic crater. The streets also have some great urban art to offer, and the creative organization and artist collective ARTE D’ZONA, founded by ARIANNA CASABURO, regularly embellishes the walls with new murals. „Cesária Évora – Queen of Morna – Barefoot Diva“ – ARTE D’ZONA – ALIPIO FORTES, ARIANNA CASABURO, KEVIN LENINE R. MONTEIRO, PEDRO SOARES & RANDY

The singer Cesária Évora is a music legend from Cape Verde and was also called the „Barefoot Diva“, as well she is the Queen of Morna. The great artist was born on 27th August 1941 in Mindelo on Cape Verde and died there on 17th December 2011.

This tribute wall painting from January 2021 was created in honour of Cesária Évora and the 10th year memorandum of her death. It was organized by the local art association ARTE D’ZONA with participating artists ALIPIO FORTES, KEVIN LENINE R. MONTEIRO aka HABIBI BOY, PEDRO SOARES, RANDY, who made the portait, and ARIANNA CASABURO, who is the founder of the urban art association.
