Kevin Bohan’s Icon Factory Mural Project
The artist collective around the ICON FACTORY has transformed the alleys and streets in the Tempel Bar district into attractive art venues with color and creativity. If you would like to know more about the creation and development of this project, the artist AGA SZOT tells the whole wonderful story in an interview. The ICON WALK leads through the district with innovative and interesting works and especially at Bedford Lane 10, just around the corner from the ICON FACTORY, there is a super interesting project wall on which the artist and collective member KEVIN BOHAN creates grandiose murals at regular intervals with changing artists. Here is a history of the fabulous works of art and creators involved over the past few years just on this single wall spot.
Latest News: Unfortunately, in end of 2023 the ICON FACTORY would have to leave its place after many years of upgrading the area with beautiful color and amazing ideas. We really hope that this fantastic art collective just moves to another location and the great creative projects still continue! There will be a few farewell events at the end of November you should not miss.

Never too old / Never 2 young – EDK in action! A very special collaboration mural! This time I painted with an 11 year old calling himself EDK. EDK loves graffiti and painting letters. We invited EDK to be part Icon Factory Collaboration Project and give him some wall space to paint his very first piece. This was his second time painting a wall and his first time doing a proper word piece. EDK is 11 years old, I picked up my first spray can in 2011 when I was 37 years old. Never too old or never too young to follow your passion and chase your dreams. Plant seeds. Big shout out to EDK for painting with me, special thanks to younger brother Kieran for helping me fill in the colours (Kieran’s first time using a spray can) and a big shout out to Grace and Dave, the very supportive parents. Thanks to Grainne at CREATIVE CONNECTIONS for donating the black primer paint for the project. – Kevin Bohan

StoryBud? – Talk to your mates lads. Lads, listen to your mates. – One of the best projects I’ve been involved with. Mental health affects us all at one time or another and we all have a story to tell, no matter who we are or where we come from. A serious topic but it was a fun and relaxed atmosphere with a great crew, thanks Emmet, Grainne, Shane, Eoin, Diarmuid, Mathilda, Kayleigh and the crew at the ICON FACTORY. The StoryBud? mural is being painted over soon to make way for a new collaboration mural, here are some photographs of the day we hung the metal panel with Emmet’s Poem beside the mural and an impromptu reading of the poem by the man himself. StoryBud? is a collaborative visual arts and spoken word project creating an awareness of some of the mental health struggles faced by men of all ages. This project is a collaboration between Artist KEVIN BOHAN, SPOKEN WORD EMMET O’BRIEN and the arts organisation CREATIVE CONNECTIONS. Email grainne@creative-connections.ie for more info. – Kevin Bohan
The poem to “Story bud?” by EMMET O’BRIEN: The frown on your face seems contagious. We’ve been wasting so much time with our hands down our jocks, Ensuring the mask of our masculinity stays upright so we forget to talk, But c’mere to me pal, are you ok? It’s been a while since you have heard a man ask. A while since one man asked another to open up about their mental state. The male ego turns us all animalistic, Fear of speaking out for if we do, We are seen as inferior, However, you are so much more than that. Now that you have opened up. I see my new hero in front of my eyes, A young lad cries and as the teardrops fall, they sting my arm, Decades of pain have been held within those ducts. Put the pain onto my sleeve, it’s where my heart lies for you. Let me feel your hardships, now is not the time to be alone. You have me by your side from the second you said things were not alright. Let me help you. Take a walk with me, down old Dublin streets and lanes where we drank and played as adolescents. We will engrave peace onto new pages within the book of your emotions. Serenity is on the horizon now that you have confided my friend, The ship of wellness has set sail. A long way from your destination, but now a crew of sailors sing alongside their captain to pass the time. We as boys always want to become men. Be a man, and cry. … – Emmet O’Brien

INNER CITY BLUES (Makes Me Wanna Holler) – New mural celebrating the masterpiece that is Marvin Gaye’s ‘WHAT’S GOING ON’ album. Released fifty years ago, Marvin transformed himself from honey-voiced, ladies-man, soul singer to a true artist creating one of the centuries greatest artistic musical statements. The album’s themes include war, poverty, drug abuse, high taxes and inflation, crime and ecological disaster but also celebrates love, family, children and friendship. Not a lot has changed in the fifty years since the release but music like this makes it easier to get through. Dedicated to P.C. for pushing me. – Kevin Bohan

“My reclining lady was inspired by Robert Crumbs long limbed and small headed ladies. KENS and myself would like to dedicate this mural to all the artists, graffiti writers, poets, playwrights, actors and actresses, film-makers, photographers, creatives and anyone who used the lockdown to start that long-gestating plan to draw or paint, or photograph, or landscape their garden or whatever way they wanted to start exploring their creative side.” – Kevin Bohan
