A Gate to the World
This fantastic and super long story wall was created by the INSTITUT FOR URBAN KUNST or in short IFUK from Denmark with its artists PETER SKENSVED, SØREN ELIAS BENDIXEN, LARS PEDERSEN, CALIGR, ULRIK SCHIØDT and MP AUER. The IFUK creates, curates and facilitate street art with a wide set of collaborators in Denmark and Europe.
The artists about the artwork: „The artwork titeled ‚A Gate to the World‘ is a 250 meter long painting about the history of Gothenburg. The painting is divided into 8 chapters, starting with the Sandarna culture who inhabited the area more than 10.000 years ago.
Numerous remains have been found from cultures through the bronze age and Viking age where Danish and Norwegian Vikings made peace at Dana holmen, just outside Gothenburg.
Sweden concurred 15 km of coast from the Danes, at the mouth of the Göta river in 1206 and built Älvsborg, the first stone castle. This short strip of west coast has been of upmost importance for the Swedish kingdom and became a hub for international trade and relations. Many wars have been fought throughout history in order to keep this gate to the world on Swedish hands.
A new fortification and city were built at the beginning of the 1600s as a Dutch colony. This was followed by even further numerous conflicts with Denmark but eventually bought back by Sweden for 25 tons of silver.
The 1700s marks the shift from local fishermen to international trade and the Swedish East Indian Company creates an abundance of wealth in the striving city. The city is however plagued by numerous fires and this marks a shift in the architecture.
Life is tough in many ways in the 1800s and almost 20% of the Swedish population immigrates, most of them sail out from Gothenburg.
The 1900s is a century of industry and culture. The city grows to both sides of the river and immigrants are now brought into the city. They are however also the first to be laid off during the depression of the 1970s.
We are curious to see what this century will bring us, but we love the vibe of Gothenburg and we have high hopes for a prosperous future.“ – INSTITUT FOR URBAN KUNST
